RESUMENMolecular Highway technology is a materials science platform for diffusion-limited catalytic and separations processes, such as those used to refine petroleum, produce chemicals and biofuels, and purify air and water. Zeolite catalysts and adsorbents powered by Molecular Highway technology perform better because of the presence of broad channels, or molecular highways, in the zeolite structure. Molecular highways improve diffusion into and out of the zeolite, enabling higher performance in diffusion-limited processes.

Zeolites are used extensively as catalysts and adsorbents (molecular sieves). Their crystalline structure, formed by a network of small pores (micropores, about 1nm in diameter) effectively crack or separate molecules, depending on the application. However, zeolite pores are very small, less than one nanometer in diameter, creating diffusion limits in the catalyst or adsorbent and limiting performance. Molecular Highway technology enables the creation of a network of larger pores (mesopores, between 7-10nm in diameter) that act as broad channels zeolite crystals. These broad channels – or molecular highways – dramatically improve the diffusion, significantly boosting performance over conventional zeolites. Applications: Refining industry: Refiners using catalysts powered by Molecular Highway technology can expect increased margin in the range of $.75 – $3.00 per barrel of FCC feed. Chemicals: Zeolites are utilized in many processes and applications throughout the petrochemical, chemical, and pharmaceutical industries. RESUMENNanoCrystalline Cellulose (NCCTM) is the primary structural building block of trees and other plants, and can be economically extracted from the wood fibres – an abundant and renewable resource. This high-value nanomaterial will be used to manufacture a wide range of uniquely enhanced products. It will enable development of new products, while transforming the performance of existing products. NCCTM improves strength and toughness and can reduce damage caused by wear, humidity and spectral radiation. Light reflectivity (tunable from ultraviolet to infra red), gas impermeability, and stability over time.

Nanotecnología es una de las Key Enabling Technologies  identificada por la Comisión Europea y por el Gobierno Vasco con potencial aplicación en muchos ámbitos. Aplicación directa en producción de pasta y papel, podría diversificar el sector papelero vasco que cuenta con un clsuter prioritario en el País Vasco y además necesita el desarrollo de la maquinaria y bienes de equipo para producir este tipo de nanomaterial desde la lignina con lo que puede contribuir a la diversificación del sector de máquina-herramienta, bienes de equipo, etc. Fabricación Avanzada.
